Newcastle will reportedly approach Celtic captain Scott Brown over a proposed switch to St James' Park when he is allowed to talk to other clubs in January.

The combative midfielder is locked in a contract dispute with his current employers and can negotiate a free transfer away from Parkhead in the coming months.

According to The Mirror, Newcastle are one of the clubs who will attempt to persuade the Celtic star to pen a pre-contract agreement ahead of a summer move.

It is claimed, however, that Neil Lennon is prepared to let Brown leave Celtic during the transfer window, and £1.5 million could be enough for Newcastle to sign him.

Meanwhile, Newcastle and Celtic are also reported to be pursuing Huddersfield hotshot Jordan Rhodes, who has scored 13 league goals for the Terriers this term.

Pardew is known to be keen to bring goalscoring reinforcements to Newcastle during the New Year in order to provide support for injury prone Demba Ba.

The Toon boss was also left frustrated during the summer at the inability of the board to land a big-money replacement for Andy Carroll.
