Newcastle United are ready to make a move for PSV Eindhoven defender Erik Pieters.
The 23-year-old was close to a move to Tyneside in the summer but the transfer eventually fell through, reports the Daily Mail.
Alan Pardew has been worrying over the contract situations of Fabricio Coloccini and Danny Simpson, so Pieters is likely being lined up as a replacement for one of the two.
The Holland international is now first choice left-back for his national team and Newcastle want to snap him up before Europe’s big boys start sniffing around.
A £3 million price-tag has been mooted, which would be seen as a bargain for a player who has cemented his place in the Holland side since Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s retirement.
The 23-year-old is said to be a good friend of Toon ‘keeper Tim Krul and Pardew will likely exploit this connection should any deal be proposed.
There is some doubt over the possibility of the deal, however, as Pieters broke his foot last month playing against former club Utrecht.
This could still not knock the deal off course, as it is thought he should be fit again come the end of January.
Newcastle may be willing to take a risk, particularly with a situation looking likely to arise with the contracts of two of their key starters in Coloccini and Simpson.
