Sir Alex Ferguson's side went on to win the double.

Ian Taylor and a Phil Neville own goal seemed to be sending the hosts on their way to the fourth round, but Ole Gunnar-Solskjaer pulled one back before Van Nistelrooy's double in three minutes sparked wild celebrations from the traveling supporters.

Martin O'Neill was left to wonder 'what if' after Vidic avoided a red card on five minutes - pulling down Agbonlahor with the striker closing-in on goal.
James Milner slotted home the penalty, but Michael Owen made it 1-1 before leaving the pitch with injury. Wayne Rooney's arrival proved to be the catalyst for United, and the England striker headed home the winner to break the traveling Villa fans' hearts at Wembley.

James Collins and Gabriel Agbonlahor struck the woodwork before Ashley Young made it 1-0 to the hosts. Marc Albrighton finished off a great move to put Gerard Houllier's side in control, but Federico Macheda pulled one back after his late introduction, and Nemanja Vidic headed home the leveler on 85 minutes to share the spoils.
