Barmby targets top-flight for Hull

Caretaker manager Nick Barmby insists whoever takes the Hull job on a permanent basis should be aiming for promotion after the Tigers beat Birmingham 2-1 to climb into the top six of the npower Championship.

The former England midfielder advanced his own claims for the role with his third win in five games as the hosts staged a second-half comeback. Despite refusing to be drawn on the chances of his caretaker position becoming a long-term commitment to the top job, Barmby says his hometown club should be challenging for a return to the Barclays Premier League.

"The ambition is to be up there," he said. "The team we've got, they should be believing they can challenge and there's no reason they can't."
