Guzan given Shay blessing

Brad Guzan is excited about getting a month-long run in the Aston Villa goal after receiving well wishes from injured number one Shay Given.

The Irishman will be out for three months after pulling his hamstring clearing the ball against Manchester United, and Guzan has revealed the kind words offered to him by the former Newcastle stopper.

"Shay has wished me luck, of course. I really appreciated it," Guzan said.

"The first time I spoke to him after the injury was when he was getting treatment after the game."

The American also heaped praise on Given, who has clearly made an impression since his summer move from Manchester City.

"He's a top lad, a great guy to have around. He's not only fantastic professionally but he's also a top man off the field too. We all get on really well," said Guzan.

"We want to get him fit and back because the goalkeeping unit is strong with him fit and available. You never want to see an injury. I hope he gets healthy as soon as possible."

Guzan wants to build on the encouraging signs that Villa showed in the second half against United, starting at the Reebok Stadium on Saturday as Villa get ready to embark on the busy festive period.

He added: "It's simply about going to Bolton on Saturday and getting the three points and making sure we get this thing going in the right direction.

"It was a difficult result against United and we want to got the Reebok and put two good halves of football together."
