McCarthy tips Jones for top

Wolves boss Mick McCarthy has hailed Manchester United utility player Phil Jones as the new Paul McGrath and believes he will become one of the top players in Europe.

McCarthy saw the qualities of former legend McGrath at first hand when a player with the Republic of Ireland and, like Jones, he could operate effectively in midfield and defence. He was unsurprised when Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford from Blackburn during the summer and is tipping him to have a memorable career.

Former centre-back McCarthy said: "I thought United would sign Phil Jones in the summer. I remember talking to Sir Alex about players and I said he was one of the top players, and I sensed he already knew that, but I was offering my opinion."
