Arsenal legend Robert Pires believes Lyon midfielder Yoann Gourcuff would be an ideal fit for the Gunners.

The France international has fallen down the pecking order at the Stade de Gerland having failed to recapture his form of old following a knee injury.

Arsenal are reported to have made an attempt to bring Gourcuff to the Emirates Stadium during the summer, while the 25-year-old is said to be keen to join the Gunners in January.

And, says Pires, should Arsene Wenger decide to launch a move for Gourcuff next month, he would be signing a player ideally suited to Arsenal.

"I know Arsenal well and it would be ideal for Gourcuff," Pires told French TV.

"Arsene Wenger rarely fails to help a player, particularly if they are French.

"He would be perfect for Arsenal's team game and the system of play. He is too much on his own at Lyon."
