Liverpool are reportedly considering a January bid for 24-year-old Porto midfielder Fernando Reges.
According to the Daily Mail, the Reds have sent scouts to monitor the £17 million-rated Brazilian and the Merseyside club could formalise their interest next month.
A combative midfielder, Fernando is said to have been identified as a potential replacement for compartriot Lucas Leiva, who will be missing for Liverpool for the remainder of the season.
The 24-year-old has undergone surgery on his knee following damage to his anterior cruciate ligament in Liverpool's Carling Cup quarter-final defeat of Chelsea.
And, with Jay Spearing also suspended and Steven Gerrard still sidelined, Kenny Dalglish is keen to bring some added steel into his midfield.
The Liverpool boss has also been linked with Rennes enforcer Yann M'Vila and Barcelona's Seydou Keita.
