Short explains Bruce departure

Sunderland chairman Ellis Short has revealed former manager Steve Bruce lost his job because his team had underperformed for too long.

Bruce was relieved of his duties at the Stadium of Light at the end of last month after a 2-1 home defeat by Wigan proved the final straw. However, Short insisted his decision was not a knee-jerk reaction.

Writing in his programme notes ahead of Sunday's Barclays Premier League clash with Blackburn, Short said: "It wasn't specifically the last home game against Wigan that determined we would change our manager, because we outplayed Wigan for most of the game."
