Matthew Etherington’s first Premier League goals of the season helped Stoke City condemn Tottenham Hotspur to their first league defeat since August and halted their charge in the title race.
Two former Spurs players combined for the opening goal, as Etherington found an empty net after Peter Crouch’s pull back.
The winger netted his second after Jonathan Walters flicked on Ryan Shotton’s long throw.
Tottenham were handed a route back into the game after Luka Modric was fouled by Glen Whelan, with Emmanuel Adebayor cooly netting the subsequent penalty.
Modric himself could have drawn the visitors level but was denied by Thomas Sorenson, before Jermain Defoe and Younes Kaboul both had efforts cleared off the line during a frantic finale.
Adebayor thought he had a second, but was adjudged to be offside, before the sending off of Kaboul ended the North Londoners’ chances to grabbing a point as Stoke clung on.
