Arsenal face fight for defensive starlet target

Zenit St Petersburg are reportedly moving to sign Arsenal target Francois Affolter.

Arsene Wenger has been credited with an interest in the Young Boys Bern defender, according to Talksport.

The Gunners boss was reportedly weighing up a move for Affolter in January, but it appears Zenit are attempting to steal a march on them.

Wenger is facing a defensive injury crisis at Emirates Stadium after all of his full-backs were ruled out with injury – three into the New Year.

The 20-year-old is said to have many admirers across Europe and his club are thought to be ready to cash in on him.

The reported offer from the Russians is said to be around £6million and they are confident they can land the player ahead of Arsenal.

Affolter is seen as a promising centre-half but has played much of his early career in a wide defensive position.

The defender is a Switzerland Under-21 regular but has also made appearances for the senior squad.

Should he join Arsenal, Affolter would join compatriot Johann Djourou in the Gunners squad.
