Arsenal face Porto fight for African striker coup

Arsenal are planning a summer swoop for highly-rated Academica striker Ederzito according to The People.

The 23-year-old African ace, who hails from Guinea-Bissau, is in the final 12 months of his contract in Portugal, and could be on his way to England on a Bosman free transfer.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has identified the powerful 6ft 2in target man as a value-for-money acquisition at the end of the 2011-12 campaign, as the frugal Frenchman continues his search to strengthen his forward line at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal chief scout Steve Rowley is understood to have watched Ederzito in action, but the Barclays Premier League outfit will face competition from Portuguese champions Porto, who are also interested in securing his signature.

Ederzito's rapidly growing talent and reputation across Europe may force the Gunners to act quickly to secure his services, before other European sides are alerted to his availability.

The Academica star is set to turn 24 this week, which will allow him to leave without his new employers having to pay any compensation in the future.
