Borussia Dortmund have moved to quash rumours that Manchester United have bid for defender Mats Hummels and teammate Mario Gotze.

With Nemanja Vidic out for the rest of the season, United may be tempted to invest in a centre-back to help bolster their New Year title push.

The 23-year-old was part of the Dortmund side that won the Bundesliga title last season, and according to CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, neither player is ready to leave for United.

"There is no offer," Watzke said. "And even if they bid €120 million [£100m], [Gotze and Hummels] would stay with us, because we don't want to sell!

"We want to play football, not to open as a bank. We want to make our five million fans happy, we can't do that by selling players."

Is it yet unknown whether United will sign a defender for the remaining six months of the season, with Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jones and Jonny Evans still in reserve.

United continue life with Vidic with a clean sheet in victory over Queens Park Rangers.
