Chelsea prepare first move for £20m United target

Chelsea are planning a January bid for reported Manchester United target Jack Rodwell, it has been claimed.

The 20-year-old midfielder continues to flourish with Everton and was rewarded for his exploits at Goodison Park with a full England debut in November.

According to the Daily Mail, Andre Villas-Boas has identified Rodwell as a key target in his rebuilding process at Stamford Bridge, although may have to spend as much as £20 million to sign him.

Rodwell, however, is currently sidelined until the New Year, which could scupper any potential move to Chelsea.

Manchester United, meanwhile, reportedly turned down the opportunity to sign Rodwell for £15 million during the summer transfer window.

However, Sir Alex Ferguson could allegedly be tempted to reignite his interest in Rodwell next month in the pursuit of midfield reinforcements.

The United boss is without Darren Fletcher for a significant period of time, while Anderson and Tom Cleverely are also still in the treatment room.
