Manchester United scouts are watching Independiente's £15million attacking midfielder Patricio Rodriguez according to the Daily Mail.

The 21-year-old has attracted attention from a host of European suitors with Benfica, Udinese and Marseille all having approached the Argentinean club about the player's availability.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson is considering a move for the South American starlet, as he looks to strengthen his midfield ranks at Old Trafford in January.

Rodriguez has been targeted by Benfica as a replacement for Nicolas Gaitan - who ironically has also been linked with a switch to Manchester United at the end of the season.

With fierce competition for the talented youngster's signature, Ferguson has reportedly sent United scouts to run the rule over Rodriguez on six separate occasions in the past three months, ahead of a proposed bid when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.

The attacking midfielder would bring much needed creativity to a depleted Manchester United midfield, who are missing the likes of Tom Cleverley, Anderson, and Darren Fletcher.

As the reigning Barclays Premier League champions look to keep their bid for a 20th domestic title on track, Ferguson may be forced into the transfer market to add reinforcements in January.
