Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has identified Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain as his No.1 January target, according to reports in Spain.

The Argentina international has netted 18 goals in 30 appearances for club and country this season, but is not a guaranteed starter at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Chelsea have frequently been linked with a move for Higuain as Andre Villas-Boas scours the market for goalscoring reinforcements.

With Fernando Torres failing to fire and Didier Drogba and Salomon Kalou off to the Africa Cup on Nations, the Chelsea boss is in need to another forward.

And, reports El Confidencial, Higuain has been identified by Blues supremo Abramovich as the ideal player to move to Stamford Bridge, although Real are holding out for €45 million.

Liverpool have also been linked with the 24-year-old, with Kenny Dalglish also considering bolstering his attacking department.

The Reds manager was urged on Wednesday to make a move for Higuain by former Anfield star John Barnes.
