Manchester United could lose out to AC Milan in the race to sign Italian international Riccardo Montolivo, according to talkSPORT.

The attacking midfielder is currently unable to agree a new deal with Fiorentina and is reportedly expected to leaves for pastures new.

With his contact due to expire next summer, United will be free to speak to Montolivo come January, but are expected to lose out to Milan.

Despite having their interest reported, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that he isn't looking to venture into the market in January, allowing Milan to poach Montolivo.

United's only hope will be if any bid in January is resisted until the summer, when the 26-year-old will be available to leave for nothing.

Montolivo is one of a number of attacking midfielders United have reportedly been looking at, as well as Lucas Rodriguez and Jack Rodwell.
