Manchester United midfield target Jack Rodwell is back on the radar of Chelsea, according to reports.
The Everton midfielder was heavily linked with a move from Goodison Park in the summer, with Sir Alex Ferguson thought to be most likely to take the youngster from the Toffees.
However, The Daily Mirror now claims Chelsea have moved into pole position for the £20 million-rated player, but will not be meeting the asking price.
Instead, the speculation goes on to claim that Andre Villas-Boas is unwilling to go beyond £10 million for the England international, who has impressed ever since making his debut back in 2008.
The Blues spent big in the summer brining younger players to Stamford Bridge, with Romelu Lukaku, Oriol Romeu and Juan Mata all arriving in west London following AVB's appointment as Chelsea manager in June.
Whilst the attacking philosophy of Villas-Boas is yet to reap full rewards for Chelsea, the former Porto boss is set to continue building for the future, and Rodwell would fit the bill given his age and talent.
As for Manchester United, they have a plethora of young England internationals who have made an impact in the first team squad this season.
Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck are expected to be the future for both the Red Devils and Three Lions, with both the academy system and cheque book helping Manchester United build a core for years to come at Old Trafford.
Rodwell is seen as a player who could add to that, with the 20-year-old having plenty of years ahead of him despite over 100 appearances in all competitions for his club thus far.
Whether Manchester United are willing to meet the reported £20m asking price remains unclear, although they may have to move fast if they want to stop the Blues moving towards negotiations for the player, which would certainly be needed given the vast difference in valuations.
