Manchester United are tracking promising FC Basel midfielder Granit Xhaka with a view to a possible summer move reports the People.

The 19-year-old Swiss international has earned rave reviews for a series of scintillating performances for both club and country over the past 12 months.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson was alerted to Xhaka's potential when his Manchester United side played Basel in this season's UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich and AC Milan have also been credited with an interest in the youngster, but United will look to fight off competition for his signature by bringing him to Old Trafford.

Xhaka's current contract at Basel runs until 2014, and with a minimum fee release clause of just £3.5million, the teenager could prove to be a bargain buy for the reigning Barclays Premier League champions.

Ferguson may look to bring in a midfielder in the January transfer window as well, as he seeks cover for injured duo Darren Fletcher and Anderson.
