Chelsea and Liverpool are both reportedly pursuing Porto defender Jorge Fucile.
The 27-year-old operates predominantly as a full-back, but is also able to perform competently in midfield as and when required.
It was claimed last week that Liverpool were monitoring Fucile as Kenny Dalglish considers bringing defensive reinforcements to Anfield during the transfer window.
Chelsea, though, are now alleged to have joined Liverpool in the race for the £6 million-rated Uruguayan, with Andre Villas-Boas having managed Fucile during his time at Porto.
But, according to Metro, Fucile is a 'long-term admirer' of Liverpool boss Dalglish, which could tip the balance in the favour of the Reds.
Meanwhile, Chelsea are still waiting to complete the signature of England centre-back Gary Cahill, having agreed a £7 million fee with Bolton.
However, Villas-Boas revealed last week that Chelsea were some way off from agreeing personal terms with Cahill, although the Portuguese always expected the negotiations to take some time to finalise.
