Toffees sweet on Simpson

Everton and Fulham are reportedly chasing Newcastle United defender Danny Simpson, according to Sky Sports.

The former Manchester United player has refused to sign a new contract and this has led David Moyes and Martin Jol to enquire as to his availability.

Toffees boss Moyes is in the midst of an injury crisis at Goodison Park and is desperate to add to his defence after losing key man Phil Jagielka for a lengthy period.

Martin Jol at Fulham is keen to shore up a leaky defence that has struggled to keep clean sheets in a disappointing start to the season.

Alan Pardew does not want to lose Simpson but negotiations over a new deal stalled some time ago, with no resolution looking likely any time soon.

Toon owner Mike Ashley is unlikely to miss up the chance to cash in on the 25-year-old when his value will further depreciate in the summer, as he only has 18 months left on his current contract.

Everton would appear to be the most in need of defensive additions but Moyes does not have much of a transfer kitty to bring new bodies in to the cahs-strapped Toffees.

Meanwhile Martin Jol has the backing of Fulham owner Mohamed Al-Fayed and would not find it difficult convincing him to sign a player who has impressed many this season under Pardew.

Newcastle’s priority is to tie Simpson to a new deal but they are unlikely to allow themselves to be held to ransom if the saga looks like continuing past January.
