Manchester United have been handed a potential boost in their pursuit of Swiss starlet Granit Xhaka.

The 19-year-old FC Basel midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from St. Jakob-Park, with The Metro reporting last week that Manchester United had taken a keen interest in the six-cap international.

Borussia Monchengladbach were also cited as a club with an interest in the player by Der Spiegel yesterday, whilst fellow Bundesliga outfit Hamburg have also made advances for the player.

However, Basel’s director of sport Georg Heitz insists the later are not alone in their interest in the player, and whilst other offers have been placed on the table, they've all been denied.

“Thorsten Fink has confirmed to me that they are interested in him and there has been an offer which we turned down swiftly,” Heitz told Kicker magazine.

“Of course a player like him attracts interest from other clubs. Hamburg are not alone in their interest. We also have other official offers.”

After the rejection, Fink quickly started looking elsewhere, and said during a training camp in Spain yesterday: "I am planning without him."

Speaking on the interest of clubs, including Manchester United, Xhaka insisted he knows nothing concrete, and merely finds out through speculation in the press. He does admit he's a fan of the leagues in Germany and England though.

"I know nothing. Only what I've read. I'm a fan of the Bundesliga and the Premier League. These are my favourite leagues," said the player.

Manchester United have also been linked with a move for Basel teammate Xherdan Shaqiri, although an Old Trafford switch in the month of January is unlikely for either player given the Swiss champions' Champions League success this season.

FCB face Bayern Munich in the last 16 of the competition in February, having knocked out Sir Alex Ferguson's Red Devils in the group stages of the competition.
