Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has made excellent progress in his first six months at Arsenal, and Arsene Wenger says he intends to utilise the midfielder more as the season unfolds.

The 18-year-old summer signing from Southampton has made a big impression since arriving in north London in August, scoring on both of his first two starts for the Gunners - in the Carling Cup and the UEFA Champions League.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was called upon again for Monday's FA Cup third round victory over Leeds United at the Emirates Stadium, and Wenger insists he is happy with how the England U21 international is developing.

"He is very close now and he will be used in the next six months for sure," the frugal Frenchman told Arsenal Player. "He is working on [his defensive side], his urgency and his committed level as well.

"When you are a young, talented player you have to experience that talent is good, but that commitment at the top level is highly needed too.

"He is an intelligent boy, he understands that, and I am very happy with him. I am confident that in the next few weeks he will play."
