Tottenham Hotspur will have been alerted to the news that Christopher Samba has handed in a transfer request at Blackburn Rovers.

The Rovers captain released a statement confirming his desire to leave just a day after manager Steve Kean said he would not be sold.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has voiced his admiration for the 27-year-old recently and Samba’s move to force a transfer could pave the way for a switch to White Hart Lane.

“I have today officially requested a transfer from Blackburn Rovers Football Club,” said Samba in an official statement.

“I have personally informed the owners, manager and executives at the club that I want to leave in this transfer window.

“In my five years at Blackburn I have always given 100% in every game I have played. I have had several opportunities to leave but I have always stayed.

“I have decided now is the right time for me to pursue a new challenge and I have asked the club to respect my decision and allow me to leave.

“I thank the fans for their support and I hope they feel I have served them and their club well.”

This news will come as a blow to Kean, who had dismissed reports the Congolese defender was headed for the exit door at Ewood Park.

Tottenham have not made a formal move for the player, but Redknapp has indicated he would like to add to his squad and Spurs have shortages in central defence.

Samba did not feature in Rovers’ ten-man 3-1 win over Fulham at the weekend and Kean told reporters it was due to sickness – the player phoned in with stomach cramps the previous day.
