Abidal ends Arsenal interest

Published Add your comment

Eric Abidal has put to bed any suggestions that he could sign for Arsenal this month after the French defender penned a new contract with Barcelona.

Abidal's previous deal was set to expire in the summer, and he had been linked with a move away from the Nou Camp during the transfer window.

Arsenal were reportedly keeping tabs on Abidal as Arsene Wenger considered bolstering his defence in the absence of Andre Santos and Bacary Sagna.

However, the 32-year-old will not be joining the Gunners, but has agreed to extend his stay in Barcelona for another year, with the option of a further two after that.

A statement on the club's official website read: "The agreement includes an option to extend it through to 2015."

Abidal signed for Barca for €9 million from Lyon in 2009 and has since made 177 appearances for the European champions.

The France international missed two months of last season after undergoing successful surgery to remove a tumour discovered on his liver.
