United keen on 'El Loco' despite Arsenal link

Manchester United are the latest club to take a reported interest in Peruvian international defender Juan Manuel Vargas.

The versatile 28-year-old Fiorentina full-back, who can also play in the wide midfield position, has been linked with a move away from the Viola for a prolonged period of time now, with Arsenal said to be monitoring the player's situation closely over the last two years.

Reports in The Metro earlier this week claimed that Zenit St. Petersburg had stolen a march on the Gunners though, with the Russian champions setting their sights on the former Universitario de Deportes starlet after failing in their pursuit of Andrey Arshavin.

However, Italian website now reports that the Red Devils are in the mix to sign the player this month, with Sir Alex Ferguson taking a keen interest in the Serie 'A' star, who is also the captain of his national team.

The report claims 'El Loco' is braced to leave the Stadio Artemio Franchi in January, with Inter Milan and Juventus also interested in making a bid for the player.
