Lucas Leiva has returned to Liverpool after spending six weeks recuperating in Brazil after undergoing a successful knee operation.

The midfielder sustained anterior cruciate ligament damage during the Carling Cup victory over Chelsea in November - an injury which ruled him out for the season.

The decision was taken to allow Lucas to go back to Sao Paulo in order to have surgery and then to rehabilitate for as long as needed in his homeland.

Lucas has, however, taken the decision to return to Liverpool in order to continue his recovery at Melwood, and is glad to be back with his teammates once again.

"I am really happy to be back," the 25-year-old told Liverpoolfc.tv. "I've really missed my teammates and the atmosphere here, so that's why I decided to come back here to continue my rehab.

"I am still a long way away, but the knee is getting better and the rehab is going well. I have to make sure I complete a perfect rehab and be back as soon as possible.

"The next stage is to get the knee moving and in the next few weeks I'll start to walk again. Hopefully in a month's time I'll start in the gym and my programme and be able to work with weights.

"When you're on crutches you cannot do too much, so I can't wait to start my programme and get in the swimming pool and things like that.

"The physios and the doctors have told me the rehab is going well and progressing well. I am doing everything I can to help my knee recover."

Prior to his injury, Lucas had established himself as an integral part of Kenny Dalglish's Liverpool side; commanding the midfield in the absence of Steven Gerrard.

It was reported that the Reds boss could dip into the market in order to sign a replacement for the Brazilian but, so far, this has not come to fruition.
