Manchester United are reportedly set to beat Liverpool to teenage Swiss defender Frederic Veseli, who currently plies his trade with Manchester City.

The 19-year-old is a former captain of Switzerland under-17s, although he has yet to make a senior appearance for Roberto Mancini's side.

According to The Mirror, Manchester United and Liverpool have been keeping an eye on Veseli's progress, and the latter are close to completing a deal for his signature.

The report continues to claim that Veseli has already undergone a medical with the Barclays Premier League champions in the hope of signing a deal at Old Trafford before the close of the transfer window.

Although inexperienced at the highest level, Veseli will provide Sir Alex Ferguson with an extra option in a defence beset by injuries.

Nemanja Vidic is sidelined for the remainder of the season, while Phil Jones is also in the treatment room after suffering an ankle injury against Arsenal.

Rio Ferdinand has also struggled this term, although he is once again fit for selection.
