Ryan Nelsen has completed his move to White Hart Lane following the termination of his contract with Blackburn Rovers, Tottenham have confirmed.

The New Zealand defender emerged as a somewhat surprising target for Spurs as the the transfer window neared closure on Tuesday night, but a move was unable to be confirmed before the deadline.

At the request of the player, Blackburn then decided to release Nelsen from his deal at Ewood Park, which enabled him to join Spurs as a free agent on Thursday morning.

"We are delighted to announce the signing of defender Ryan Nelsen," read a statement on the official Tottenham website.

"The New Zealand international joins us from Blackburn Rovers where he spent seven years and made over 200 appearances."

The 34-year-old has been dogged by injury this season, and has made only one appearance in the Premier League for Steve Kean's struggling Blackburn side.

After completing his move to north London, Nelsen will compete for a starting berth alongside the likes of Michael Dawson, Ledley King, Younes Kaboul and William Gallas.

It is unclear whether or not Nelsen will be available for Tottenham's clash with Liverpool next Monday at Anfield.
