Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish has been talking up his trio of Steven Gerrard, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez – claiming they are ‘iconic’ figures.

The Reds boss was speaking after his team’s 6-1 demolition of Championship side Brighton and Hove Albion in the FA Cup fifth round tie at Anfield on Sunday.

It was the first time the three players have started together and Dalglish was full of praise, though insisted that Liverpool’s success will be down to the entire squad.

“The three of them are fantastic footballers and they played fantastically today,” the Scot said on the official Liverpool website.

“The more any team gets their iconic players on the pitch, the more chance they've got of being successful. But we'll stand and be counted as a squad.”

The Reds were rampant on Sunday and all three were impressive in a victory that continued the club’s impressive form in domestic cups this season.

Carroll and Suarez were both on the score sheet and the Uruguayan even managed to miss a penalty late in the second half.

The win was also notable for the performance of Stewart Downing, who had arguably his best game in a Liverpool shirt.

Downing combined with Carroll to get the striker just his sixth goal of the season.
