England teen Magri handed Liverpool trial

Liverpool have handed teenage defender Sam Magri a trial at Anfield.

The 17-year-old, who has been capped by England at three junior levels, is yet to make a senior appearance for current club Portsmouth, but could be sold for £150,000 as the south-coast side battle against administration.

Magri is expected to spend a week at the Reds’ Melwood training ground, before getting a competitive chance for the reserve team against Everton next Friday.

“Just to put everything to bed. It's true in what everyone is saying involving me,” Magri wrote on his Twitter account to confirm the trial.

The centre back captained England U16s to glory in the Victory Shield back in 2009, and travelled to the U17 World Cup in Mexico last summer as the Three Lions progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition before losing to Germany.

A first U18 appearance, against Slovakia back in November, suggests Magri’s progress is taking shape, and Kenny Dalglish has sensed an opportunity to cash-in on Pompey’s plight with the teenager.
