The 26-year-old Ivory Coast international is out of contract at Stamford Bridge this summer, and is yet to agree terms over a fresh deal.
Preliminary negotiations had been positive before Kalou left west London for the Africa Cup of Nations last month, and the two parties are waiting to reopen talks.
Both sides are happy with the terms on the table - believed to be around £80,000-a-week, but the main sticking point is the amount of playing time the player has had under Villas-Boas.
Having made just nine first-team appearances for Chelsea this season, Kalou is not prepared to settle for a bit-part role in the side, and may still choose to leave on a free transfer this summer if an attractive offer is made to him.
Despite his limited playing time, Kalou has scored three goals this campaign, and is rumoured to have attracted interest from Premier League rivals Arsenal.
