Manchester United will have to contend with Bundesliga giants Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund to sign Basel starlet Granit Xhaka.
The Swiss midfielder has been interesting Sir Alex Ferguson after his club dumped the Old Trafford club out of the Champions League, according to talkSPORT.
Now the Red Devils will have to contend with the German clubs for the signature of one of Europe’s most highly rated young midfielders, along with team-mate Xherdan Shaqiri who has just sealed a move to another German side, Bayern Munich.
The report has also claimed that United will have to stump up at least £10million to sign Xhaka, even though his current contract runs out in 2013.
Ferguson was facing a midfield injury crisis earlier in the season and was receiving criticism for his team’s lack of central midfield creativity.
The return of Paul Scholes from retirement eased the burden somewhat on those who were fit, but a move for Xhaka would likely be the long-term solution Ferguson has in his mind.
