Manchester United are planning a summer move for Benfica duo Nicolas Gaitan and Javi Garcia, according to reports in the Portuguese press.

Correio da Manha believes that scouts representing the Premier League giants were in attendance for Benfica's match against Porto at the weekend.

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been heavily linked with a move for Gaitan, ever since the midfielder impressed in a Champions League clash at Old Trafford earlier this season.

Meanwhile, Garcia is also believed to have been earmarked as a potential acquisition when the transfer window reopens in June.

Ferguson tempted United legend Paul Scholes out of retirement in January to bolster his midfield options, but is expected to bring in one or two new players with a view to strengthening the squad in the long-term.

Manchester United were one of 20 teams reportedly present at the league encounter between two of Portugal's biggest clubs, and with that in mind, the likelihood is that the club will face fierce competition for the signature of both players.
