Liverpool and Manchester United are on course for a summer showdown over the signature of Rayo Vallecano midfielder Michu according to Elcentrocampista.

Both Kenny Dalglish and Sir Alex Ferguson have reportedly declared their interest in the player, sending scouts to run the rule over the 25-year-old in recent weeks.

Ferguson is rumoured to have sent brother Martin to Spain in order to assess the goal-scoring midfielder, while representatives from Anfield are said to have also made the journey recently.

Michu has enjoyed an excellent season so far and is La Liga’s joint leading Spanish goal scorer along with Fernando Llorente, with 13 goals to his name.

Perhaps most tempting for both clubs is the fact that he could be available to leave the Madrid club on the cheap.

Spanish newspaper Marca report that a fee of around €4 million would be enough for either Liverpool or Manchester United to secure the services of Michu.

Rayo sit in a comfortable tenth place in their first campaign back in Spain’s top division since 2003.

However they have suffered severe financial difficulties over the past year, and may be forced to cash in on their most valuable assets which include Michu, who only arrived at the club last summer from Celta Vigo.
