Manchester City v Sporting Lisbon

Etihad Stadium; Europa League Last 16; Thursday March 15; KO 2005

Roberto Mancini will once again have to make do without captain Vincent Kompany, as the central defender is still suffering form a calf strain.

He will also be missing Pablo Zabaleta due to a sore hamstring and midfielder Gareth Barry may sit out die to an on-going back niggle.

Recently returned misfit striker Carlos Tevez will not feature as he is not eligible to play in the competition – City did not register him when he was AWOL in Argentina.

Sporting manager Sa Pinto will be missing first choice right-back Joao Pereira, after the defender picked up a second booking on the first leg that triggered an automatic one-game suspension.

De Jong: Empty-handed season not acceptable

Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong has said his side cannot accept a season without winning some kind of trophy.

It has been a tough week for the Citizens, where they have seen fierce rivals Manchester United leapfrog them to the top of the Premier League after a miserable 1-0 loss away to Swansea.

Their other chance of silverware is the Europa League, but they will have to come form behind in the second leg at the Etihad Stadium tonight after going down by a single goal to Sporting in Lisbon.

“We always said at the beginning of the season we wanted to compete to win as many competitions as we can,” he said on Sky Sports.

“We have come so far and we have just got to fight and concentrate until the end.

“Our main goal is the Premier League, that doesn't change, but we're still in the Europa League and the only way we can succeed this season is to win one of the prizes.

“After we won the FA Cup, everybody is hungry for more. We brought players in to make the squad bigger and stronger. You can't have any excuses at the end of the day.”
