Battling Black Cats earn a replay

Published Add your comment

Everton were forced to settle for an FA Cup quarter-final replay after being frustrated by Sunderland in a 1-1 draw at Goodison Park.

Phil Bardsley fired the Black Cats into an early lead with a superb strike but Everton dominated a lively encounter after Tim Cahill equalised with a 24th-minute header.

Royston Drenthe, who had a strong penalty appeal turned down early on, hit the woodwork while Simon Mignolet made a fine double save from John Heitinga and Nikica Jelavic late on.
