Liverpool are looking into signing Fiorentina’s Juan Manuel Vargas, despite interest from Zenit St Petersburg, according to The Metro.
The Peruvian is understood to be close to a move away from Serie A, after failing to agree a deal with either Arsenal or Manchester United.
Reports in Italy now suggest The Reds will take advantage of their rivals’ delay by launching a summer bid for Vargas.
His versatility could make him a valuable asset to Liverpool, who have previously had problems at left-full back, while Stewart Downing’s form since his move from Aston Villa could spark a bid for a replacement.
However, the interest from Zenit could help collapse Vargas’ move to Anfield, and instead see him move to Russia, with a club likely to be playing Champions League football next season, a height Kenny Dalglish’s side are unlikely to hit.
The crucial aspect of the deal could revolve around Zenit’s ambitions of signing Andrey Arshavin from Arsenal, who is currently on loan.
The 28-year-old’s representatives are said to have already held talks about a potential move to Russia, but Liverpool’s interest could turn his head.
