Manchester United struck a significant blow in the title race as they moved four points clear at the top of the Premier League after victory against Wolves.

With Manchester City not playing until Wednesday night, United had the opportunity to extend their gap at the summit of the league, and took full advantage.

Wolves contributed to their own downfall after Ronald Zubar was stupidly sent off in the first half for two yellow cards, but United were as fluid as they have been for some time.

Jonny Evans opened the scoring prior to Zubar's dismissal; finishing off after Michael Carrick had diverted a corner from Wayne Rooney into his path.

With a three-pronged attack including Rooney, Javier Hernandez, Danny Welbeck goals were always likely to be on the agenda for the champions, and the former found Antonio Valencia who scored United's second.

If Wolves were already up against it at 2-0 and a man down, their task seemingly became insurmountable when Welbeck added a third before half-time.

Barely an hour had passed when United stretched their lead to 5-0, with Hernandez netting both the fourth and fifth goals to complete a miserable afternoon for Wolves.

The threat of relegation is becoming an increasing concern for Wolves, and they have now dropped to the foot of the table on goal difference.
