Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson believes the Red Devils’ elder statesmen will guide Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to the title.

The former Old Trafford favourite is convinced that the greater experience of United’s squad will see them prevail in the title race over their fierce rivals Manchester City.

Roberto Mancini’s side welcome their local counterparts to the Etihad Stadium at the end of April and it looks set to be a crucial clash in terms of where the title will go come the end of the season, but Robson is confident United’s veterans will be able to handle the pressure better than the Citizens’ more inexperienced players.

“When I look at our boys and the City boys, when it comes to handling the pressure I know for a fact we will just keep playing the same way we’ve been playing all season,” Robson said in the Manchester Evening News.

“They will not get nervous about it because they’ve been there and done it all before. Some of the City players, you don’t know how they are going to handle it.

“Are they going to get nervous if they are not playing quite so well? We don’t know because they have not been in this situation.”

Ferguson’s side leapfrogged City into first the weekend before last when Mancini’s charges went down 1-0 at Swansea City while United were dispatching West Brom at Old Trafford.

City host Chelsea next and the pressure will be on as United’s 5-0 destruction of Wolves on Sunday means they now lead the Blues by four points.

Robson feels this situation will not affect the Red Devils’ squad and was in praise of them for the way they deal with the pressure of a title run-in.

“With players like Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and now Rio Ferdinand, you just have to watch the way they play when the pressure is on them,” he added.

“A lot of players cannot do that because they try too hard, go down a different path and it might not work.”
