Liverpool target Dries Mertens looks set to snub a move to Anfield in favour of the Bundesliga and Bayern Munich, according to The Sun.

Mertens currently plies his trade with Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven, but is expected to leave Holland in the summer and the report claims Kenny Dalglish was interested in making him a Red.

The Merseyside club reportedly see the 24-year-old as a long-term replacement for Dirk Kuyt and the player’s club value him at around £7.5million – a modest amount for a talented young player who has scored 18 goals in 26 games this season.

However, it looks as though the Belgian would prefer a shorter trip and a move to German giants Bayern Munich, who look like missing out on the Bundesliga title to Borussia Dortmund for a second year in a row.

Dalglish may be looking for further additions this summer as his Liverpool side continue to struggle in the Premier League this season, with Champions League football looking highly unlikely as things stands.

The league gloom over Anfield got worse on Saturday when the Kop looked on as their side went down 2-1 to relegation strugglers Wigan.
