Lazio are reportedly leading Manchester United in the race to sign highly-rated Basel teenager Granit Xhaka.
The 19-year-old midfielder has been earning rave reviews for his performances this season, and particularly for his displays in Basel's impressive Champions League campaign.
It would appear Sir Alex Ferguson was impressed by the Xhaka during Basel's two encounters with Manchester United this term, with the Swiss champions ending the Premier League champion's hopes of glory in Europe's premier club competition.
According to talkSPORT, Ferguson has been following Xhaka closely, although a formal approach for his services failed to materialise in January.
Italian paper Corriere dello Sport now claims that Lazio have opened discussions with Basel regarding a summer transfer, and the latter are ready to listen to offers in the region of £7 million.
Basel will, of course, be loath to lose Xhaka - unless their demands are met - especially having agreed to let promising winger Xherdan Shaqiri sign for German giants Bayern Munich at the end of the season.
