Black Cats hold Spurs

Published Add your comment

Tottenham Hotspur dropped points in their attempts to qualify for the Champions League after a tame draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Both sides could have had first-half penalties, but referee Chris Foy waved away handball appeals against Scott Parker and Phil Bardsley

Michael Turner blocked Rafael van der Vaart’s goal bound shot and Gareth Bale headed over during an afternoon of few chances in the north-east.

The point helps Spurs leapfrog third placed Arsenal for at least 24 hours prior to The Gunners’ meeting with Manchester City on Sunday, while three points separate them from fifth placed Newcastle United.

Sunderland’s slim hopes of qualifying for Europe appear all but over after the stalemate, but the point against one of the division’s top four gives added kudos to Martin O’Neill’s reign as manager.
