Chelsea great Gianfranco Zola has admitted he would love to become manager at his old club when the post becomes available.

There has been much speculation over who Blues owner Roman Abramovich will appoint as his new manager at Stamford Bridge in the summer and Zola could not resist throwing his hat in the ring.

However, he conceded he was unlikely to have his dream Blues return granted and also praised the work Roberto di Matteo has done since taking over after the sacking of Andre Villas-Boas.

“Chelsea? I'd be a hypocrite if I said that I wouldn't want the job, but I don't think there are the right conditions in place for that,” Zola told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“As a Chelsea fan I always want the team to be in the best possible hands, as they are right now with Roberto Di Matteo.”

Zola moved to Stamford Bridge in 1996 and spent seven years at the club becoming their most popular player in the process.

He moved back to his homeland Sardinia in 2003 and the country’s biggest club Cagliari, just before the Abramovich takeover.

He was also named in the Chelsea Centenary XI when the club celebrated 100 years of existence in 2005.

Zola has limited managerial experience but did have a spell in charge of West Ham United between 2008-10.
