United to battle Chelsea for £40m Modric

Published Add your comment

Manchester United are set to gazump Chelsea and Manchester City  by making a £40million offer for Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric this summer.

The Daily Star is reporting that Old Trafford boss Sir Alex Ferguson sees the Croatian playmaker as the ideal long-term replacement for Paul Scholes.

The Red Devils will be hoping to beat the interest from Stamford Bridge and the Etihad Stadium to sign the Spurs star, though he was very close to joining the Blues last season and Roman Abramovich may have a say in matters.

The report claims that Ferguson has put the 26-year-old at the top of his summer list of transfers after failing to bring Inter Milan’s Wesley Sneijder to Old Trafford last summer.

The United chief is searching for someone to step into the role currently being filled by veteran Scholes, even though he is reportedly going to be offered a new one-year contract extension.

The 37-year-old has been instrumental in what looks like a successful title bid for United since his decision to come out of retirement in January.

Scholes’ return has signalled a run of form that has seen them overtake rivals City at the top of the Premier League.
