Rafael van der Vaart has revealed he plans to leave Tottenham – but only to return to the Netherlands at the end of his career.

The Dutchman joined Spurs from Real Madrid in 2010 and has instantly become a fan favourite, hitting 22 goals in his 51 league starts for the Lilywhites.

Although a series of hamstring injuries have at times hindered his progress, Van der Vaart revealed earlier this week that he is now ‘fully fit’ and ready to play his part in Tottenham’s charge for a top four finish this season.

After leaving Ajax in 2005, Van der Vaart went on to play for Hamburg before finalising a move to Madrid for £11.4 million in 2008.

Now the 29-year-old has revealed that he plans to make his way back to his homeland and the Eredivise at the end of his career.

"I see it as an obligation to play football once again in the Netherlands," Van der Vaart told Voetbal International. "I have a feeling I have to give something back to the Eredivisie, for what it has meant to me."

Spurs’ form has slumped in recent weeks, culminating in their 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Chelsea in their FA Cup semi-final showdown last Sunday.

Having previously enjoyed a 13 point advantage over Arsenal in January, Harry Redknapp’s men now sit five points behind the Gunners in fourth place and level on points with Newcastle in the battle for a top four finish.

With Chelsea, a further two points back in the battle for a top four finish, going up against Arsenal this weekend while Spurs face relegation-threatened QPR, they could be able to make a giant leap forward in their attempts to land a place in the Champions League despite their run of just one win in their last eight league games.
