Chelsea fans are understandably on a high following the club’s midweek win over Barcelona in the Champions League, but their focus must now turn to the battle for fourth and a clash against Arsenal this weekend.
Whilst the Gunners have all but assured their place at Europe’s top table next season, the Blues are still two points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur, whilst surprise package Newcastle United also separate the capital rivals.
The financial implications of missing out on the European Cup would be huge for owner Roman Abramovich, whilst caretaker manager Roberto Di Matteo will need a big finish to the season to stand a chance of taking the vacant position on a full-time basis.
Since his appointment as manager, Chelsea have won 11 out of 13 matches, creating a platform for a remarkable turnaround in fortunes after Andre Villas-Boas’ short reign at the helm. Supporters have been delighted by the Italian’s immediate impact.
“Di Matteo is a genius. First Barca, next those Gooners! Love it #rollingtovictory,” wrote @FranktheBlue on Twitter.
Using Intel’s Data Info Stream app, it’s easy to gauge the level of support the club’s former midfielder is gaining in the battle to become permanent boss, whilst for many the game against Arsenal is nothing but a formality.
“Great #ucl result - now for a win at arsenal - love #cfc,” added @MikeyP72
@BigWally added: “Arsenal we're coming for you this weekend! #3pointsawayfromhome.”
The Blues fans will also be keeping an eye on Barcelona’s weekend fortunes, with an ‘El Clasico’ match-up coming ahead of Tuesday’s second leg at the Camp Nou.
“Barca have madrid, we have arsenal, no rest for the best! come on #cfc,” was the final thought from @PurplePayne.
Not to be outdone, Arsenal fans have also taken to Twitter to make their voices heard.
Again looking at Intel’s InfoStream app, which provides both the latest social media messages from fans as well as key stats ahead of any Premier League match, it’s clear that they are still confident despite Monday night’s defeat to Wigan.
Arsene Wenger’s side are five points ahead of Spurs, and whilst they’ve played a game more than Harry Redknapp’s men, victory against the Blues on Saturday could well see them over the line.
@LarrytheGooner calmed the nerves of the fans, noting: “#arsenal will destroy #cfc this Saturday, no need to panic!”
After the 5-3 win at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, it’s no surprise that Arsenal fans expect a victory at the Emirates Stadium, and the general consensus amongst the club’s supporters is that Chelsea should forget their win against Barcelona quickly.
“Hope #cfc enjoy barca win, ‘cos it’s all change this weekend at the emirates,” noted @QueenHails89.
And @CharlieNails added: “Why's everyone saying wait till Chelsea get to the Nou Camp, wait till they get to the Emirates on Sat!”
