England manager Roy Hodgson appealed for supporters to get behind the Three Lions following his appointment as national team coach yesterday.

Hodgson, who signed a four-year deal, was seen as a surprise choice for the role, with Harry Redknapp the favourite to succeed Fabio Capello.

But FA chairman David Bernstein asserted that Hodgson's international experience and success at club level made him the preferred candidate.

Elsewhere, in the Premier League last night, Liverpool slumped to yet another defeat at Anfield, while Stoke City held Everton to a draw.
