Jan Vertonghen’s agent has revealed his client has his heart set on a move to the Premier League, while Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has said he is interested in landing the Belgian international in the summer.
Vetonghen has long been linked with a move to both Tottenham and Arsenal, with the two north London clubs set to battle it out for the Ajax defender once the summer transfer window opens.
Arsenal have seemingly made it their business to conclude their transfer dealing as early as possible, with the signature of Lukas Podolski already in the bag.
Tottenham however appear to have stolen a march on their rivals after it was reported earlier this week that they had made an official approach to Ajax for their club captain.
While Redknapp refutes that Spurs have approached Ajax over Vertonghen, he did admit the 25-year-old was on his radar.
"He's a player I've watched, he's a very good player," said Redknapp after Tottenham’s 4-1 win over Bolton last night.
"But there are lots of clubs interested in him. We've not spoken to the club, he's just a player I've watched along with loads of other players this year."
While Arsenal and Spurs lead the chase for his signature, the in-demand defender recently revealed he has a ‘dozen’ options to pick from in the summer, including Manchester City and Newcastle.
Mustapha Nakhli, Vertonghen’s agent, insists that Spurs have indeed made contact with Ajax and says that playing in the Premier League is something he has ‘worked really hard for’.
“There is enormous interest. A number of clubs have made concrete approaches, with Tottenham among them," Nakhli said.
"Jan has a few dream clubs. Playing at the top of the Premier League is something he has worked really hard for."
While Spurs remain confident of landing their man his current club manager, Frank de Boer believes Vertonghen would be better of making the switch to Spain in order to turn out for Barcelona, another potential suitor.
"I hope he will leave for Barcelona,” he told reporters. “Of course, Tottenham is a great club for Jan, but I think he will fit perfect at Barca."
