Chelsea have been heavily linked with Van der Wiel and were said to be tempted on making a move for the 24-year-old with just one year remaining on his contract.
Contract talks between Ajax and Van der Wiel’s agent broke down earlier this season and now the right-back looks set to leave the Eredivisie outfit on the cheap.
However Goal.com report that Chelsea’s interest in Van der Wiel has cooled in recent months, the same of which can be applied to Barcelona, leaving Roma in the clear to try and lure Van der Wiel to Italy.
The Italian outfit are in the market for a right-back and view Van der Wiel as the perfect target as lack of form and fitness this season have prompted the likes of Chelsea and Barcelona to turn their attention elsewhere.
Speaking earlier this week, Van der Wiel insisted he was unsure of where he would be playing next season, while also revealing that he is yet to receive a single ‘concrete’ offer from an interest club.
"Not a single club has shown a concrete interest in signing me so far, so I don't know where I will play next season,” he said in an interview with Goal.com.
